Baseline Survey in Mzimba
In November 2023, PACE Conducted baseline survey in Mzimba south and north. The survey was aimed at getting views to be inputted in the Arts for Gender Justice Concept. The study targeted Local leaders, Community members, Local Artists and Duty bearers. This study revealed that Mzimba district is not fully gender inclusive, some of the key issues established during the study were that women do not have access to direct inheritance, it only goes to the male descendants, women hardly hold any important position in the community i.e. there is no female chief (traditional leader) in Mzimba, male domination is present across all spheres including businesses, education and family.
One of the participants, a female government employee, she expressed that she faces a lot of resistance in the community and at work as the people are not accustomed to being led or directed by a female. When we met Artists, they complained that due to the cultural influence in Mzimba, it was hard for an artist to conceptualize an idea around gender and justice or art against gender-based violence as it may not be popular culturally, however they displayed keen interest to break the habit and confront gender and justice issues through their artist expressions and emphasized on the need to use local artists within the communities and not outsourcing talent. Arts is power!
